Jonathan has been a corporate executive since 2007, beginning his career as a practicing attorney and transitioning into senior management roles at multiple early and middle stage companies. Born in Charlotte, Mr. McCollum is a life long Carolinian, spending most of his childhood in rural South Carolina. Mr. McCollum earned his B.S. with a double major in Political Science and Sociology at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, North Carolina in 2004.

Immediately following graduation, Mr. McCollum attended law school at Campbell University School of Law, obtaining his J.D. in 2007. While in Law School, Mr. McCollum held an internship position in the Chambers of the Honorable Mark Martin, then an Associate Justice on the North Carolina Supreme Court.

Upon graduation from Law School and admittance to the bar, Mr. McCollum began handling real estate closings for Bowen Law Firm, PA. in Cary, NC. Mr. McCollum fell in love with Cary and has lived there ever since. After working with Beth Bowen for one year, Mr. McCollum

opened his own practice and represented individuals and businesses on a variety of real estate, regulatory, and transactions matters from early 2008 until late 2010.

Since 2010, Mr. McCollum has concentrated on executive management positions at several companies including Academy Mortgage, Gold Law Firm, PA, & StarQuest International, Inc. These diverse roles have given Mr. McCollum a wide range of business, human resources & change management experience that uniquely compliment Mr. McCollum’s years of client advisement.

Currently, Mr. McCollum works with private equity firms, production companies, and numerous institutional and private clients on a range of issues, including, but not limited to: structural consulting, start-ups, change management, and strategic planning.

Mr. McCollum is a resident of Cary, North Carolina where he enjoys watching Carolina Hurricanes hockey, cooking, and spending time with his two Shi-Tzus. Family is important to Mr. McCollum and he enjoys spending time with his partner, parents, sister, and brother-in-law.

Kellie Gonzalez

North Carolina Attorney Kellie Gonzalez, the firm’s founder, has more than a decade of experience practicing in the areas of family law, criminal and traffic law, wills and trusts, and real estate law. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication from North Carolina State University. Kellie then went on to receive her Master of Arts in Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management from North Carolina State University. Attorney Gonzalez is a graduate of North Carolina Central University School of Law, where she received a diverse exposure to various venues of the legal system through her internships with the Wake County District Attorney’s Office, the North Carolina Attorney General’s Office and the North Carolina Court of Appeals. While in law school, Kellie was selected as a Senior Editor for the North Carolina Central Law Journal as well as winning a spot on the prestigious Moot Court Team. In her participation on the Moot Court Team, Kellie was awarded recognition as a semi-finalist in the National Organization for Women’s (NOW) 5th Annual Sojourner Truth Moot Court Competition. The competition featured contestants from law schools throughout the United States. Kellie also served as Secretary of the Student Bar Association.

Prior to entering her legal career, Kellie was employed at North Carolina State University and with the Town of Cary. Before opening her own practice, Kellie was an associate at a local law firm. She has also worked for North Carolina Legal Aid. She has been a member of the North Carolina Bar Association, the Wake County Bar Association, the Pitt County Bar Association, the Tenth Judicial District, the Pitt County Women Attorneys. and the Wake County Academy of Trial Lawyers.

Kellie is active in her local legal community. She has participated in the Wake County Bar Association’s “Lunch with a Lawyer Program” and interviews potential candidates for admission to the North Carolina Bar. She has been a member of the Raleigh Junior League and is a graduate of the Raleigh Leadership Academy. She is currently involved in the Junior League of Greenville, NC and has served as a Board Member. She also serves her community in her role on the City of Greenville’s Community Appearance Commission. She was born and raised in North Carolina and is married to Eduardo Gonzalez. They have two daughters, Eliana and Juliana.

    Kyle Smalling


Kyle Smalling is CEO and co-founder of Capital City Law. A native of Boone, North Carolina, Kyle spent his early years in the High Country before moving to Raleigh with his high school sweetheart and now wife, Laura. In Raleigh, Kyle graduated from North Carolina State University with a degree in Chemical Engineering and worked as a manager at an engineering start-up, which led him into the fields of corporate compliance, intellectual property, and eventually to his law degree and license.

Kyle is most grateful for his incredible wife Laura, daughter Annabelle (who has been described as one of the cutest girls to walk the face of the planet), and son Abel. When he is not working, Kyle enjoys taking hikes and visiting local museums and parks with his family, computer programming, and carpentry / home restoration (ask him about his family’s forever home).

In addition to his duties as CEO of Capital City Law, Kyle operates a varied practice with one central goal – to help clients create, grow, and protect those things they value most.
